How thoroughly ashamed am I, to admit to being a human!
I just read a story of a dog that was left behind when the family moved on. This loyal and loving creature had waited for three long years for them to come home. She was eventually discovered nearby, in an old derelict barn, of which the roof had long since caved in, surrounded by a litter of dead puppies, and in a dreadful state. She was painfully thin and terribly ill, and extremely frightened. What Hell she must have suffered!
Sadly, although someone has finally been kind enough to help, and she has been brought to a place of love and safety, the years of neglect have already taken their toll. She is now being treated for heartworm but it is too late to save her. She only has a few months to live.
The thing about this story is that it’s not a rare occurrence.
These animals are kind and forgiving, bear no grudge (unless brutally forced to) and will love and protect humans, and most other creatures, as one of their own.
I read other stories of dogs who have saved lives – Have made a human’s life better… in some cases even made it possible – Dogs that have protected humans and brought happiness where there was none. All of this proves that dogs have a right to be loved, respected and protected in return.
Even so, more and more of them are being abandoned and left to suffer horrifically …or are mistreated and abused, tortured, starved and beaten …and yet they are inherently our most loyal family members. Why do we put our most faithful friends through so much heartache? It’s no way to repay them for all of the unfailing love and support they give us.
…and before you say it, I know that this kind of thing happens to other animals too – For goodness sake, we even treat each other that way. What kind of an ugly species are we?
…and I know that they are treated much worse across the globe – but that does not make it right
…and I know that there are horror stories about a dog’s retaliation – but that is just my point. It is ‘Retaliation’. Such animals have been taught, either by design or by abuse, that they must defend themselves (or that which they are protecting). In either case it’s not their fault. We have to ask ourselves, “What did we do to make an, intrinsically generous animal, who only wants to be loved and belong, retaliate so?”
Yes, I am truly disgusted that those foul beings who do such heinous things to cause so much pain and sorrow, are the same species as me!
Comments from another source:
Tears ran from my eyes as I read this. I recently adopted a dog off death row. she has been a wonderful addition to my house and I want to encourage others to enrich their lives with one of these castaways.
I’m glad there’s people like you, that do care.
A sad read – sadly timely and necessary.
I hadn’t heard of heart worm until I came here and my cousin’s dog, still a pup at only a year and a half old, died from it. Apparently, some selfish people often just let their dogs die and don’t treat heart worm at all.
